HISTORY-Ohio Reformatory for Women-1930- oldest and youngest

Assistance from group on facebook: Criminal Genealogy
In 1930 my cousin Verdie was in Ohio Reformatory for Women for killing her 4th husband. I have the census listing her there and there are 7 census pages of inmates!. Got me curious who was the oldest and who was the youngest.
Turns out Mary Keeler 67 was the oldest in 1930 a convicted abortionist. Mary was born in West Virginia and was married at age 19
and Helen Coss the youngest at 16 still unsure of her crime but here are the news items for both. Helen was married at age 14.

CEMETERIES-Yarn Haul day PLUS- cemeteries and scenery on Cape Cod

Decided to take a mental health day and did food shop first thing. Got back here and changed clothes and left at 10am got back at 4:25pm. Only 5 of the yarn shops were on Cape. I managed to do those plus a couple of cemeteries and a lot of scenery and structures. I had wanted to get off Cape to one in Plymouth but that is just too much driving for me. So that is it for my entertainment excursions until next Spring.
Will add photos later- took 370 pix- have deleted some LOL
okay that only took me two days to enter the gravestone photos from Brewster and Sagamore.
so now to the nitty gritty of the road trip
First stop: Great Yarn in Chatham.
Found it amusing as I was crossing the street that the bank is now for sale.  It was a popular bank that went through many transformations- last was Santander.
 Great Yarns and Books
I have to say the selection in here is the best, most variety and laid out well. They were jammed and had just opened. I stood in line with my purchase for one hour!

what I purchased there

Next stop was Adventures in Knitting- Harwich
I should suck on a Ricola before entering this shop- lovely selections and reasonably priced Encore yarns but I get a cough and tickle each time. Even forgot to take pix inside! But I took a photo of the outside and this is what I bought there.

purchase-

Headed to rt 6A Brewster area
Old Manse- wanted a front shot but also was not going that directions so- side view just as interesting
Old Manse Inn
Then to Brewster Cemetery on Lower road. The stones in front are from the 1800s and looks like some preservationists went in a couple of years ago and cleaned up the stones with D2.

The new trio of niches for cremains located in the newer section.
Scholomiti family- mother and two children killed in a Suicide Alley accident on the Mid Cape Highway in 1989

and this vegetation that I usually see in South Wellfleet Cemetery in abundance.

on to Paine's Creek. Parking lot was full so it was just a drive through.

I think a wedding was about to start

On to Salt Yarns in Dennis
egads no matter what I chose the price was wrong. Lovely shop but maybe a bit to high end for me. There was a yarn shop in this area years ago called Lady Bug then that closed and this building started Yarn Hound and that turned into Salt Yarn. Parking lot was full. Luckily a woman was backing out and I slipped in- not easily but LOL

now to the parking situation- the white car was parked at an angle and too close to the side line. But I managed to park and get in and out without nicking the white car. It was tempting but not with my brother's truck.
my purchase at Salt Yarn
Heading to Black Purl in Sandwich I made many stops.
First was Bass Hole- the place never disappoints.

more later time to hide under the quilts.

on way to Black  Purls a few sites and structures.
These  two homes are leaving Bass Hole. The first had total window replacement and renovations and looks great. The next is just a plain and simple older home.

then my favorite house on Cape Cod. It was dilapidated  and for sale for many years. Finally sold and is being renovated. Some day I hope to get a photo that is close up not a drive by!
Then decided to turn down the road to Mattakeese. Had dinner at the  restaurant there in the 80s. I bit into a cherry tomato and it shot across the table and landed in another diners water glass. Funny to me but I did not dare laugh. Boyfriend at the time was likely mortified.
Well always thought the road led to a beach or parking lot where you could see a structure off in the distance. I ended up having to turn around in a private beach parking lot oops. The place jinxed me twice.

Cobb Hill Cemetery on the left as I was leaving to go back to rt 6A
Always an interesting cemetery with ancient stones but so many hills and ruts!

Back on rt 6A there is Crocker cemetery high on a hill with a wavy picket fence- May not be obvious in this photo but there is a blurry optical illusion that you can "see through" the fence when driving by. LOL
next railroad tracks West Barnstable- no trains that day.

Then on to the railway station in West Barnstable which I have been told was used in the film "Golden Boys". Pix of that and the interesting structure there an old Antique Stove store in disrepair.

Antique Stove store

back to 6A
Sparkling water  to the side of the road in Sandwich

Finally get to Black Purl- quite a haul for someone used to driving maybe 6 miles to food shop. LOL I do love the ride though.
I park and get out of the truck and spy a bumper sticker that looks interesting. Sun is bright so I cannot read it so I take a photo to read it later. I was standing there not realizing the car was backing up LOL. Innocently I walked along to go inside- the car paused and called out to me. They wanted to hand me a sticker- they saw my interest.. LOL

Inside Black Purls

that last photo- that auction property has been doing that for years- wonder if it finally sold!

What I purchased at Black Purls
yellow "polyester" !
ah from there to my real reason for driving this far- to go to Sagamore cemetery and find the gravestone for the Adams family. For William Osborne Adams on the stone, he died young. I just notice by checking findagrave and William's brother Stuart's wife has a larger photo including the entire plot. It is huge- I should be able to find it next time.
I wandered the entire cemetery looking. Early on the quest I stumbled upon the ancient area that was overgrown last time I was there and it was June and too hot and buggy to explore. I took many photos none came out too clear though- good thing another member of findagrave got there sooner with a better camera!
But here are some tidbits.
Abbe plot a steep climb to view and the flat stones too large for me to get decent photos but at least I finally climbed up there ha ha ha
some samples of old section and what I had to deal with:

^^^ assuming this guy is an eye doctor- I have been trying to capture this image for years. Just realized it is like railroad crossing lights LOL
Cynthia Ellis. I rarely see Cynthia in older stones.

These two were the first ones I approached noticing the old section was cleared.
more old section and stone wall revealed

oh and what a surprise the house next door is totally falling apart.

By the time I finished wandering through here I was pooped. I had planned on going back to Hyannis via rt 130 and stopping by Bay View Cemetery and Sandwich Town Cemetery. Decided to go back by way of rt 6A to get to the last yarn shop.
along the way
Sagamore Inn, Claire Murray which used to be Black's Wool shop I think and a man running faster than I would attempt on a highway!

above old Treasure Island, a miniature golf course with a plane crashing and looks like something going in where Mildreds used to be.
and people really enjoying the inflatable park in West Yarmouth

Now to the last Yarn shop- Who Gives a Stitch- in business only 9 weeks. Least inventory and smallest shop but I spent more here than the other shops. overspent my 49.00 budget by 5 bucks. not bad. Hope I helped small business owners in the process.

 oh my purchase there

Home stretch at last
some classic cars on the way to the rally at Patriots Square I guess.

and this back at Paine's creek- bicyclists riding side by side. thanks.
well that wraps up that trip. Thanks for looking if you got this far!

Well on the 22nd of September I decided to do that ride to Sandwich again and find the Adams stone. No wonder I had trouble seeing it- it was on the back side of another stone different name and shiny and shallow engraving. Still not a decent photo but at least I know where it is now good grief. Also along the way there - was a classic motorcycle meet at the Barnstable County Court House of all places so there was THAT detour behind the courts! A few interesting structures along the way and the mansard roof house across from Hallet's Ice Cream shop- I was finally able to get a decent shot of that renovation.
While I was there I browsed the front area and was intrigued by a note on photo request that there were no "Tuppers" I found a few some fixed some needing repairs. Also a stone down and I was able to solve that one HANDY through a little research and of course bending over upside down with the camera LOL
Tupper
Handy
so that was rewarding!
sights along the way

so heading back stopped at BayView and drove through- nothing there caught my eye. Went to Sandwich Town Cemetery and I always visit the Quinlan grave when there and cry. Took a few pix and it got too hot and I came back to Chatham
Quinlan- after seeing the mailbox painted I decided to use up the acrylic paints I bought a couple of years ago and I painted MY mailbox- felt good to be creative that way.
paint has faded some already so I guess I should get out there with a can of spray sealant. LOL
Thanks for looking.
