HIKES: Another Day with Dara & Linus

warning many pix. started with 160+ edited down to 122. How many make it here- who knows.

Met up at Hot Chocolate Sparrow, got 2 decaf coffees and decided to walk the bike path across the way. I think I did most of the chattering on the maybe 2 miles. I should apologize in advance for talking endlessly, dripping nose in cold weather and constantly yanking my pants up. oh and yeah saying " I can't " a lot and then doing it.oh and fumbling and dropping things. I did not wear a hat on this jaunt and am still paying for getting my head chilled LOL But it was delightful.

Then back at the trucks we decide to go to Fort Hill. First stop had to be the restrooms near TD Bank. Leaving the parking lot to rt 6A I realized too late that there is a sign saying right turn only. I shot across and did a left anyhow. That or wet my pants. Entering the restroom it was immediately obvious that someone had "laid some rail" in there recently and either did not flush, could not flush, or it was really fresh and they were taping our reaction. The big door handicap one was closed. I let Dara go first. I stood by the sink and stared at the screened window that was locked and hardware removed. Trying to figure out how to cut the screen and break the glass. This was fouling my mask and of course my angst was not helping matters. I got in there and peed and the toilet flushed automatically  TWICE. Trying to figure out how to wipe with the rope of paper that occurs. Get out wash hands and panicky leave the place. I could barely breathe. funny not funny.

So finally on the road to Fort Hill. Oh the changes since I was last there maybe 2 years ago. Trees and land cleared, brush cleared. New plastic restrooms, new displays and kiosks- pagodas one for the Rock of Life where the Nauset Wampanoag sharpened their tools.

light not ideal- even when the sun came out around 3pm no crystal clear pix. oh well.

Michael Uliano 1959-2001

I wonder what his story is. Tried to glean something from the inscription.

so as you approach the beach again and toss trash in the receptacle you see these signs- plenty of them. In fact you see no pet signs everywhere that make no sense.

So tonight on facebook the National Seashore posted this notice and what follows are my comments and theirs.

Instead of a post-turkey  nap , may we suggest a walk?  Here are 11 great seashore hikes, in addition to miles and miles of beach!

At this time of year, leashed pets are allowed on seashore beaches and the three paved bike trails. Pets and bikes are not allowed on seashore walking trails.
The Salt Pond Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving and will reopen at 9 am on Friday. Stop by and let us help you plan a perfect seashore day!
(photo attached to this by them) On a late fall day a small group heads off on a walk through a field with ocean in the distance.

Me:define "Pets and bikes are not allowed on seashore walking trails." I can see the no bike part on trails but no leashed pets?

 Cape Cod National Seashore
Correct. Pets are not permitted on our unpaved walking trails. They can frighten wildlife, they leave their scent, which deters wildlife, and their waste can foul waterways.

I posted the sign photo on their page and got this reply

Cape Cod National Seashore We understand the confusion. Hemenway Landing is town land, where pets are allowed. Pets are not allowed in the adjacent Red Maple Swamp/Skiff Hill/Fort Hill areas, which are national seashore lands.

I wasn't about to debate the issue or discuss it further as this is the government.

BUT wildlife is everywhere and we are basically unrestricted. Dogs allowed on pavement. Does the wildlife know to avoid the pavement? oh well pointless. I just like to listen to myself talk-type.

so we get on the board walk and eventually make a choice "scenic point" thinking ah see some water. I obviously cannot walk and read. If I had noticed the .1 mi I would have known it was a DEAD END! LOL

Used to be able to hear many bird back there years ago. still interesting and a large root system to a tree is pulled up and exposed.

the above is part of the old boardwalk must be at least 10 years old.

Lost & Found in the woods and three women that reminded me of my 3 Rhode Island cousins :)

sun came out

and a tree with branches pointing up!

some more rocks

juniper berries.!

oh that climb

as we approached the entrance I saw a couple standing to the side either reading the  posts or whatever and he coughed uncovered. I held my breath for 20 feet- they passed us going down. ugh

some more scenic sunshine shots just because. it was so beautiful.

so heading back I was going to shop at Star market for the three items I somehow missed on my list on Saturday. That rotary near Trees- I was i n the wrong lane to head to the lights at the church so had to go straight and had more of that beautiful sun in my freaking eyes and the road glare. I decided to come back to the apartment and do without. LOL
